How to set up automatic return labels
Auto-returns generate a return label for orders shipped with a given carrier - so each parcel can go out with a ready return label inside. Two switches have to be on: the organization-wide one under the Returns map, and the carrier's own Automatic Returns section.
- 1
Go to Shipping → Returns and scroll below the map to Return label defaults. Set Automatically generate return label to Enabled - it is the organization-wide switch, and no auto-return label is made while it is off. It saves as soon as you change it.
- 2
Optionally set Add return label as order item to Enabled in the same card, so the label is also added to the order as a Return Label item.
- 3
Open the carrier the outbound parcels go with: on the Carriers tab, click Configure on its card and scroll to Automatic Returns.
- 4
Set Automatically generate return label to Enabled. Choose the Return shipping option (which carrier handles the return) and the Return shipping method (locker, courier) - leave them empty to return with the same carrier and method the order went out with.
- 5
Pick the Auto-return countries - only orders shipped to these countries get an auto-generated return label.
- 6
Click Save in the page header.
Good to know
- Both switches have to be on - the one under Return label defaults and the carrier's own. The carrier's Auto-return countries narrow it further.
- The per-country Returns map does not drive auto-returns. It covers return labels created from the returns portal and from Create Return on an order, so a carrier set up in one place is not set up in the other.
- Auto-return labels appear on the order as an Auto Return shipment, downloadable or printable from the Shipments window.
- If the carrier refuses the return label, the order moves to Needs attention with the carrier's error.
- The two Return label defaults switches used to be under Settings → Fulfillment → Shipping Label controls.
